Application Reconsiderations – Don't Lose Hope After a Refusal
Was your visa, permit, or immigration application refused? You’re not alone and you’re not out of options. At Makland Immigration, we help clients review their refusal letters, identify what went wrong, and determine whether a reconsideration is possible.
A refusal doesn’t have to be the end of your immigration journey.
What is an Application Reconsideration?
A reconsideration request is a formal appeal to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or a visa officer, asking them to review their decision on your application. This is only recommended when:
- You believe the officer made a clear error, or
- You provided all necessary documents, but they were overlooked or misunderstood.
This is not a re application it’s a legal way to ask for a second review of the original decision without starting over.
When Should You Request a Reconsideration?
You may consider it if:
- You received a refusal letter that seems unfair or inconsistent
- Your application was refused due to misinterpretation or clerical errors
- Your supporting documents were ignored or misread
- You were refused without being given a chance to respond to concerns
❗Note: Not all refusals are eligible for reconsideration. Our team will evaluate your case honestly and guide you toward the best course of action whether that’s a reconsideration, re application, or appeal.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is a refusal the same as a permanent rejection?
No. Many refusals are temporary and can be challenged or corrected with a reconsideration or new application.
Can I reapply after a refusal instead of requesting reconsideration?
Yes, in many cases reapplying is better than requesting reconsideration. We’ll advise you on which option is best based on your case.
What are GCMS notes, and why do I need them?
GCMS (Global Case Management System) notes are the detailed, internal electronic records of your Canadian immigration or citizenship application, held by IRCC. They provide a comprehensive, 30–70 page history, including officer notes, assessment, and reasons for delays or refusals, offering much more detail than the standard online status check.
How long does it take to get a decision on a reconsideration request?
Decisions on reconsideration requests for Canadian immigration (IRCC) typically take between 4 to 6 weeks to several months (4-5 months), with no fixed, guaranteed timeline. For CPP Disability, the process can take several months. IRCC is not obligated to respond to these requests as they are not formal legal processes.
Can Makland Immigration handle reconsiderations for visitor visas and study permits too?
Absolutely. We assist with all types of refusals including study permits, work permits, visitor visas, PR, and sponsorships.
